The keyword that ranked #1 and sold nothing
A software site obsessed over its biggest organic keyword — 22,000 monthly clicks, position one, the pride of the SEO deck. Every roadmap protected it. Pipeline stayed flat.
The clue appeared when we joined the keyword to landing-page conversion data. That hero keyword was a how-to query bringing students and tire-kickers; it converted at 0.1%. A quieter keyword with 900 clicks converted at 6%.
Ranking volume had been mistaken for business value. The trophy term was traffic, not revenue.
We rebalanced content investment toward the small, high-intent cluster around that 6% keyword and its cousins. Trials from organic rose from 70 to 155 a month while the hero keyword kept ranking, now politely ignored.

Lesson: the highest-traffic keyword is rarely the highest-value one. Join queries to conversions before you build a strategy around a vanity ranking.
