Mobile app postbacks fail for one reason: install and event tracking are mixed up
For app offers, an install postback only says the app was installed. It should fire once, usually after the SDK or MMP confirms the first open. An event postback is different: it fires when the user does something useful inside the app — registration, purchase, tutorial complete, or another agreed action.
MMPs sit in the middle and translate app behavior into the network’s language. They receive the click, store the click ID, match the install, and later send event postbacks if the in-app action matches your offer rules. If the click ID is missing, the MMP cannot tie the action back to the affiliate click, even if the app user is real.
Most tracking bugs come from three places:
• the click ID is not passed into the app link
• the install fires twice, or fires before attribution is ready
• the event exists in the app, but the MMP is not mapped to send it out
Check the whole path before buying traffic: click URL → app link → SDK/MMP attribution → install postback → event postback. If one step is broken, the network sees blank gaps while your dashboard shows users. Fix the handoff, and install vs event reporting stops being a guessing game.
