How to audit 500 aging blog posts in a weekend without drowning in spreadsheets

Start with one export, not 500 browser tabs. Capture each URL, topic, clicks, impressions, conversions, backlinks, word count, and last meaningful update. Add columns for search intent, content quality, and the recommended action.

Use four labels: Keep, Refresh, Merge, or Remove. Filter in this order:
• Pages with declining impressions or clicks
• URLs ranking on page two or three
• Articles targeting the same intent
• Posts with outdated facts, broken sections, or no clear next step
• Thin pages with little unique value

Do not judge traffic alone. A low-traffic page may support a valuable topic, earn links, or convert well. A high-traffic page may be cannibalizing a stronger URL. Check the query and intent before making a decision.

For each Refresh, write one sentence describing the missing improvement. For each Merge, name the destination URL. For each Remove, record the reason and check internal links first. Batch similar updates so the work stays repeatable.

The goal is not to edit everything. Build a defensible queue, fix the clearest decay first, and leave every URL with a documented next action.
