Auditing parameter URLs before they eat your crawl
Faceted nav and tracking params spawn near-infinite URLs. Audit them like this:
— Pull every distinct query parameter from your logs (utm_, sort, filter, sessionid, ref…).
— For each, ask: does this param change the page's main content, or just reorder/track it?
— Content-changing (e.g. ?category=) → may deserve indexing, give it clean canonicals.
— Reorder/track only → canonical to the clean URL, and stop internally linking the parameterized version.
— Combinatorial filters (color × size × brand) → these are the real budget killers. Block the multi-param combos in robots.txt.
Here's the thing: Google retired the old Parameter Handling tool in 2022 precisely because it wants you to fix this with site architecture, not a settings panel.
The fix lives in your internal links and canonicals. There is no magic dropdown anymore.
