Month 11: my recipe-adjacent kitchen site was humming, 30k/mo. Then I redesigned the homepage with a gorgeous full-width hero image and a fancy slider on every category page. It looked incredible.

Month 12: traffic slid to 22k and I had no idea why. No update, no penalty, no lost links. I blamed Google, the season, the weather, everything but myself.

Month 13: I finally ran a page-speed check. Largest Contentful Paint had gone from 1.9s to 6.4s. The 'gorgeous' hero was a 3MB unoptimized PNG, and the slider loaded a heavy script on every page. Mobile users were bouncing before content rendered.

The fix was unglamorous: convert images to WebP, kill the slider, lazy-load below the fold. LCP back to 1.7s.

Month 15: traffic recovered to 33k, slightly above where I started.

The setback: a month of declining income caused entirely by a design choice I made because it 'looked professional.' I optimized for my eyes, not my visitors' phones.

The takeaway: a beautiful redesign can quietly wreck your Core Web Vitals and bleed traffic with zero obvious cause. Before you blame Google, check your own LCP. The prettiest version of your site is sometimes the slowest, and Google counts the seconds even when you don't.
