Merge two competing posts without sacrificing rankings or qualified clicks
When two URLs target the same query, do not redirect the weaker page by default. Compare clicks, impressions, rankings, backlinks, conversions, and search intent. A page with less traffic may still own valuable links or answer a different need.
Choose the destination by evidence: stronger links, broader coverage, and a closer fit to the main intent. Combine both outlines into one brief. Keep unique sections that serve the same reader; remove overlap, contradictions, and filler. Preserve useful FAQs, examples, and internal links.
Before redirecting, map the old page's valuable terms and links to sections on the destination. Rewrite the title, headings, and introduction around one clear promise. Update internal anchors, then redirect only when the surviving page fully covers the old intent.
After the merge, watch rankings, clicks, indexation, and conversions. If traffic falls, check for lost intent or backlinks before reversing the change.
Merge around intent, not word count: preserve what earns visibility, remove duplication, and make one URL the obvious best answer.
