Short answer: orphans are pages with zero internal links pointing to them, so search engines barely crawl them. Find them, then route links in.
— Crawl your site (Screaming Frog free tier covers up to 500 URLs)
— Cross-reference the crawl with your XML sitemap or a list of all published URLs
— Any URL in the sitemap but not in the crawl's "inlinks" is an orphan
— For each orphan, find 2-3 thematically related published pages
— Add a contextual link from each into the orphan, with descriptive anchor text
— Add the orphan to its cluster's hub page or pillar if one exists
In practice: orphans are often your oldest, link-worthy posts that fell out of navigation. Rescuing them is one of the highest-ROI hours in internal linking.
