Canonical tags on filter pages work only when Google sees one clear winner

A canonical is a hint, not a command. It helps when filtered URLs are near-duplicates of a clean category page: same products, same intent, only the sort or one facet changes. In that case, point the filtered URL to the main category or to the best representative page and keep the signal consistent across internal links, sitemap entries, and canonicals on the target page.

Canonical tags get ignored when the filtered page is materially different. If the page has its own search intent, unique inventory, or a strong internal link profile, search engines may index it anyway. The same happens when your site sends mixed signals: canonical says one thing, internal links point everywhere, and pagination or faceted parameters create too many variants.

Do not rely on canonicals to fix crawl traps. If parameter combinations can generate endless URLs, block the trap at the source with parameter handling, facet limits, and clean internal linking. Canonical is for consolidation, not for controlling discovery. A page that should not exist for users usually should not be left open for bots just because it has a canonical.

Best rule: use canonicals on filtered URLs only when the page is a duplicate or near-duplicate and you are happy to lose its standalone indexing. If the filter page deserves traffic, make it indexable on purpose and give it real category content instead of hoping the tag will do the job.
