Closed or moved branches don’t have to erase the local rankings you already earned
When a location shuts down or relocates, the worst move is to delete the page and let search engines guess. Keep the URL live long enough to send a clear signal, then choose one path: update the page for the new address, or mark it as permanently closed and guide users to the nearest active branch.
Do this on the location page:
— Change the NAP, hours, map pin, and driving directions if the branch moved
— Add a short notice like “This location has relocated” or “This branch is permanently closed”
— Keep reviews, photos, and local content only if they still match the entity behind the page
— Add a strong internal link to the closest replacement location
Avoid soft 404s. A page with no purpose, no address, and no guidance wastes the equity it built. If the branch is gone for good, a 301 to the nearest relevant location can work, but only when the match is obvious. If the move is temporary or the brand has multiple nearby branches, keep the page intact and make the status explicit.
The rule is simple: preserve the page’s local relevance, then reduce confusion for users and crawlers. That is how you keep authority from leaking when a branch changes.
