Reconciling canonicals with hreflang, step by step

The single most destructive international SEO mistake is pointing a localized page's canonical at a *different-language* page. It tells Google your alternates are duplicates of one master — and your translations vanish from their markets. A reconciliation pass:

— Crawl and extract, per URL: declared canonical and full hreflang set. Put them side by side.
— Rule one: each localized URL's canonical must be *self-referential*. de-DE page canonicals to itself, never to the en-US original.
— Rule two: every URL in an hreflang cluster must be canonical (self-canonicalizing). Hreflang among non-canonical pages is ignored wholesale.
— Flag any row where canonical-target ≠ self. These are the bleed points. Cross-language canonicalization is almost always a CMS default someone never overrode.
— Re-verify after fixing: the canonical and the self-hreflang entry should point at the identical URL, byte-for-byte (trailing slash, protocol, parameters all matched).

We found this defect on roughly 1 in 4 sites that also ran hreflang — usually a translation plugin treating localized pages as variants of a parent. The data suggests it correlates with plugin-managed multilingual setups far more than hand-built ones.

Caveat: parameterized or A/B variants legitimately canonicalize elsewhere — don't blindly force self-canonical everywhere. The rule applies to language alternates, not all canonicalization.
