Topical authority is not a score; these proxies tell you if a cluster is working

Do not chase a single “authority” number. It is usually a lagging, blended metric. Use proxies that show whether a site is becoming the obvious answer for a subject:
— More pages from the cluster start ranking for non-brand queries
— Internal pages pull impressions on related terms, not just one target keyword
— New articles get indexed and pick up impressions faster than older isolated pages

The best signal is breadth, not one hero URL. If ten related pages begin appearing for variations of the same intent, your topical map is doing its job. If only the hub ranks while supporting pages stay invisible, the cluster is too thin, too similar, or too dependent on internal links that do not add context.

Check content depth in plain language: does each page answer a distinct sub-question, use unique examples, and link to the next logical step? Thin overlap kills clusters. So does random publishing. Topical authority grows when every page earns its place in the map and reinforces a narrower part of the subject 🧭

Use these proxies together, not alone: ranking spread, impression growth across related queries, and how many cluster pages actually surface in search. If all three move in the right direction, the site is building authority where it matters.
