Map search intent to the right page format before you build a content cluster
A topical map works when each query has a job. Classify intent from the result a searcher expects, not the keyword alone. Check the SERP pattern, modifiers, and decision stage.
1. Informational: guides, tutorials, definitions, and explainers. 2. Commercial investigation: “best,” review, and alternatives pages with criteria and trade-offs. 3. Transactional: product, service, category, or landing pages built for action. 4. Navigational: brand, feature, and support pages for known destinations.
Give the broad question a hub, supporting queries their own articles, and high-intent terms focused pages. Link upward to the hub and sideways only when the next question is obvious. Do not force every keyword into a blog post.
Before publishing, check cannibalization: if two URLs target the same intent and promise, merge them or separate their angles. A format mismatch is often a structure problem, not a writing problem.
Build around the journey: one page, one primary intent, one clear action. This keeps coverage broad without near-duplicate URLs.
