Finding your real advocates in the mention stream
It was a slow Monday when a software brand decided to stop guessing who their fans were. The mentions already knew.
The turn was a scoring pass. Step one: pull everyone who mentioned the brand positively three-plus times in 90 days. Step two: score by reach, but also by recurrence — a small account that mentions you monthly beats a big one who did it once. Step three: check if they answer other people's questions about you unprompted. Step four: flag the ones doing your support for free.
They found 40 quiet advocates, most under 5,000 followers, several already fielding product questions in forums. A small thank-you program — early access, direct line — turned them into 40 official voices. Branded mentions from that group rose 3x in a quarter.
The takeaway: advocates aren't the loudest accounts — they're the recurring ones who help others without being asked. Score for recurrence, not just reach, and you'll find a sales force hiding in your data.
