Topical authority is hard to measure—these proxies are the ones worth watching

Don’t chase a single “authority score.” It mixes too many signals and often lags behind reality. Instead, use a small set of proxies that answer one question: is the site getting easier to trust for this topic?

Look at these five signals together:
• Coverage depth: do you have one strong page, or a full cluster around the subject?
• Internal linking: are hub pages and supporting pages pointing to each other in a clean structure?
• Query spread: are pages ranking for many related terms, not just the head keyword?
• Fresh engagement: do readers stay, click deeper, and return to related pages?
• SERP footprint: do multiple URLs from your site appear for the same topic family? 📌

The best proxy is not traffic alone. A site can get visits from one strong page and still have weak topical authority. Better signs are breadth of rankings, consistent movement across the cluster, and fewer orphan pages. If one article wins while the rest stay invisible, the topic map is probably incomplete.

Use a simple review loop: pick a topic, list the main subtopics, check which ones already have pages, then compare that map to your Search Console queries and internal links. Missing pages and weak links usually explain weak authority faster than backlinks do.
