For ecommerce sites, the quarterly health check should start with the basics: index coverage, crawl depth, and parameter handling. Look for pages blocked by robots.txt but still linked internally, URLs that get crawled but never indexed, and important categories buried too deep. If a filter page has search demand, decide whether it deserves indexation; if not, keep it out of the index and out of the crawl waste.

Then audit the URL patterns that create duplicates:
• sort, color, size, and price parameters
• faceted combinations that generate thin pages
• pagination that can be crawled forever
• internal links pointing to endless filter states

Check canonicals, noindex rules, and internal anchors together. A canonical only helps when the rest of the signals agree. If category pages are supposed to rank, they need unique copy, strong internal links, and enough product inventory to stay useful. If they are just doorway variants, consolidate them cleanly.

Finish by sampling logs or crawl data for traps: faceted paths with huge URL counts, near-duplicate titles, and pages that receive crawl hits but no index value. The goal is not to block everything. It is to keep crawl budget on pages that can actually win.

If the site keeps generating junk URLs faster than you fix them, treat that as a content and architecture problem, not just a technical one.
