Free tools and calculators attract links when they solve one boring job fast
For SaaS sites, the best link magnets are not “resources” in name only. They are small tools that make a task easier: a calculator, a template generator, a grader, a cost estimator, a checklist builder. If people can use it without booking a demo, they are more likely to share it and link to it.
Build for one narrow job. A good tool should answer one question, not ten. Keep the input simple, the output readable, and the next step obvious. If the result is useful on its own, it can rank for the problem keyword and earn links from list posts, comparison pages, and niche blogs. 🧭
What usually works:
— calculators with a clear business outcome
— simple templates that save setup time
— diagnostic tools that surface a score or gap
— free generators tied to a common workflow
Do not hide the result behind signup. If the tool needs an email, let the user see value first. Add one copy-paste embed block, a shareable result URL, and a short explanation page that targets the same query. That mix turns one tool into a page worth citing.
If a SaaS site wants links without chasing outreach forever, a useful free tool is often the cleanest asset: easy to understand, easy to reference, and hard to ignore.
