Closed branches don’t have to kill local rankings if you handle them like a map, not a dead end.
When a location shuts down or moves, search engines and users need a clear next step. Do this first: update the Google Business Profile, replace the landing page with a status page, and point internal links to the nearest active branch or the new address. If the branch relocated, keep the old URL live and explain the move instead of deleting it.
Use the old page for signals you already earned:
• preserve reviews, photos, and local content where allowed
• add a short note: “This location has moved”
• keep schema, NAP, and embedded map aligned with the new branch
• 301 redirect only when the page has a true replacement
Avoid the common mistake of sending every closed location to the homepage. That breaks relevance, confuses users, and usually wipes out the local intent the page had built. If there is no replacement, let the page answer the query honestly: closed, no longer serving this area, and where nearby customers should go instead.
Best rule: keep the strongest local page alive as long as it still serves a real purpose, then redirect with intent, not cleanup pressure.
