Stop reading “total revenue” only: it hides which destinations and pages actually pay

Stop reading “total revenue” only: it hides which destinations and pages actually pay

Track travel affiliate revenue on two axes: destination and content type. Destination shows demand quality; content type shows intent. A city guide, beach roundup, and insurance page can all earn differently even with similar traffic.

Use one naming rule across links, feeds, and reports:
• destination = country, city, or region
• content type = guide, comparison, deal, or review
• funnel stage = inspiration, planning, booking, post-booking

Then compare earnings by segment, not by sitewide average. A page about one route may bring fewer clicks but better payout because users are closer to booking. Another page may drive volume yet get weak commission because it attracts broad research traffic.

Watch for mismatches: destination pages with high bounce and low EPC usually mean the content is too generic; content-type gaps often show up when “best hotels” pages outperform “things to do” pages, or the reverse. Tag every link cleanly, or you will optimize the loudest page instead of the most profitable one.

Build decisions from segments, not from blended totals. If a destination converts well, expand into related content types; if a content type wins across many places, template it and localize it.
