Pull From Sitemap vs Keep It Listed: When Deindexing A Page

You want a page out of the index. Two moves, easy to get backwards.

To deindex, you must:
— Keep the page returning 200 AND keep it crawlable in robots.txt AND set meta robots noindex.
— LEAVE it in the sitemap temporarily so Google re-crawls and sees the noindex faster.

The classic mistake:
— Removing the URL from the sitemap the same day you add noindex. Now Google crawls it less, takes longer to notice noindex, and the page lingers in the index.

Sequence:
— 1. Add noindex. 2. Keep in sitemap. 3. Wait for GSC to report it dropped. 4. Then remove from sitemap.

Pass/fail:
— ✅ noindex pages are NOT blocked in robots.txt (block hides the noindex).
— ✅ Sitemap removal happens after deindexing, not before.

Definition of done: deindex first, prune sitemap second.
