Your pagination is bleeding equity into pages 2 through 99 that nobody will ever rank.
Every "Next" and numbered-page link is a real internal link passing real equity — into archive pages that exist only to host more links to your actual content. You're routing PageRank through a hallway nobody lives in.
The fix isn't rel=next/prev (dead since 2019). It's reducing the number of paginated steps to deep content: bigger category hubs, better tag pages, contextual links from strong articles directly to deep posts so they don't depend on page-7 of an archive to be reached.
Shorten the path. Stop feeding the hallway.
How deep does your pagination go before a product appears? Count it.
