Steps:
— Step 1: build crawl-URL set (followed internal links) and known-URL set (sitemap + logs + analytics)
— Step 2: orphans = known minus crawl-reachable. Validate they return 200 and are indexable
— Step 3: segment orphans by value. Typical: 61% are junk (old params, test pages) ▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░░, 39% have traffic history
— Step 4: noindex/remove the junk; add ≥2 contextual internal links to the valuable 39%
— Step 5: confirm reconnected URLs enter the crawl path within 14 days via logs

So what: half the work is deletion. Reconnecting orphans only pays when they have demand — score by historical clicks before you link.
