Myth: Minify your JS to go faster
Minify on a 480KB bundle: 480KB -> 470KB transfer. After gzip, ~2KB delta.
Minification strips whitespace and shortens local vars. Compression (gzip/brotli) already encodes repeated whitespace near-free, so post-compression savings are tiny.
— Real lever: the parse+compile+execute cost of those 470KB, which minify does NOT reduce. ~210KB of JS = ~280ms main-thread work on a mid Android (p75 device).
— Code-split + tree-shake removes whole functions; that's where the ms live.
Minify is table stakes, not a tactic.
Takeaway: 0 ms of TBT (total blocking time) saved by minify; ship less JS instead.
