The cafe that climbed the pack with a camera

Meet a cafe owner in Portland with four photos on her profile — all uploaded the week she opened, two years ago. The listing felt frozen. So did her ranking, stuck around fifth for 'coffee shop near me.'

Most owners think photos are decoration. They're also a freshness and engagement signal. Profiles with a steady stream of new, geotagged photos signal an active business, and the images themselves drive the clicks and direction-requests that feed local ranking.

We set a dead-simple habit: three new photos a week. The latte of the day, the new pastry, a corner of the room with light coming in. Real, not stock. Taken on the phone, on location, so the metadata carried the right place.

Weeks one and two: flat. She felt silly photographing croissants.

By week six the listing looked alive, and Google noticed the behavior it triggered — photo views up 300 percent, direction requests up 80 percent. She moved to second in the pack, then first on weekends. Foot traffic on Saturdays jumped enough that she added a staff shift.

The lesson: a regular drip of real, on-location photos keeps your profile 'active' in Google's eyes and pulls the clicks that lift rankings.
