The seven-minute page that nobody read

The seven-minute page that nobody read

A B2B blog bragged about a 7m 12s average time on its flagship explainer. The content lead used it to justify writing longer. Then conversions from that page flatlined while the number kept climbing.

The clue lived in the distribution, not the average. We segmented sessions: a tiny cluster of tabs left open overnight dragged the mean up. The median time was 1m 04s.

Most readers left in the first screen. The 7-minute figure was an artifact of how time-on-page is measured — it counts the gap until the next event, so the last page of any session and abandoned tabs distort it wildly.

We rewrote the intro to front-load the answer. Scroll-depth past 50% rose from 28% to 49%, and demo requests from the page climbed from 9 to 21 a month.

Lesson: averages hide the people who left. Read the median and the scroll curve before you trust time on page.
