Deleting weak pages can hurt a site: audit the URL before you remove it
The “delete everything thin” rule confuses low traffic with no strategic value. A page may still earn links, rank for long-tail queries, support internal linking, or assist conversions.
Before deleting, check:
• impressions and clicks across the full query set
• backlinks, referring domains, and mentions
• conversions, assisted conversions, and signups
• internal links and overlapping pages
Choose the action that fits the evidence:
• Refresh when the topic is sound but the content is stale.
• Merge when two URLs target the same intent; redirect the weaker one.
• Remove when there is no demand, value, or unique purpose.
• Keep and improve when it serves users despite modest traffic.
A clean sitemap is not the goal. A useful, non-duplicative content system is. Treat deletion as the result of an audit, not the audit itself.
