The price war fought in the comments
An apparel startup kept losing checkout-stage shoppers and couldn't see why — until it started monitoring competitor mentions instead of just its own.
In the comments under its own ads, a pattern emerged: 1,300 mentions a month of one rival's name, almost always paired with "cheaper" or "same thing for less." The startup wasn't losing on product. It was losing the comparison conversation in public.
Rather than slash prices, the team built a side-by-side fabric-quality explainer and trained its community replies to address the comparison directly, in the same threads where it happened.
Mentions pairing the brand with "worth it" rose from 8% to 29% of comparison talk over two months. Checkout conversion recovered 14%, with no price cut.
The takeaway: competitor monitoring shows you the exact sentence costing you sales. Win the argument where it's actually being had — in the replies.
