Multi-trade sites fail when every service page fights the same keyword
On a contractor site, “roof repair,” “roof replacement,” and “roofing services” cannot all lead with the same copy, same title pattern, and same city terms. That creates cannibalization: search engines see overlapping intent, and users see three pages that all sound like one.
Use one page for one job-to-be-done. A homepage can cover the full company, then each trade gets its own pillar: roofing, plumbing, HVAC, electrical. Under each pillar, build narrower service pages only when the intent is distinct, such as leak repair, storm damage, water heater install, or furnace tune-up.
Keep the URL and internal links clean. The parent page should link down to the child pages, and the child pages should link back to the parent, but not sideways unless the services truly overlap. Avoid copying the same service-area paragraph across every page; that is where local SEO gets noisy fast.
A simple test: if two pages would rank for the same search phrase and answer the same question, merge them or rewrite one to target a different intent. One page should own one primary query, one call to action, and one clear service angle. This keeps the site easier to crawl and much easier to scale.
