3 Search Console reports that expose index bloat before rankings slip
In ecommerce, index bloat usually shows up long before traffic drops. The first place to look is Pages: sort by indexed URLs, then scan for filter combinations, internal search paths, tag pages, and empty parameter URLs. If the count keeps climbing while useful category pages stay flat, crawl waste is likely growing.
Next, open Crawl stats and compare hits to important templates. A healthy store should not send a big share of Googlebot activity to faceted URLs, pagination dead ends, or duplicate sort orders. When crawl demand goes to low-value pages, new products and categories get discovered slower.
Coverage patterns matter too. Watch for spikes in Duplicate without user-selected canonical, Crawled - currently not indexed, and Alternate page with proper canonical. Those labels often mean the same content is being served through too many URL variants, and Google is choosing to ignore most of them.
Best cleanup order: noindex or block useless filter states, consolidate canonical signals on real category pages, and keep only search-friendly facet pages that deserve indexation. Then add internal links to the pages that should win. The rule is simple: if a URL would never earn links, traffic, or demand on its own, it probably should not be in the index.
