The hybrid setup nobody talks about
It's not auto-ads-OR-manual. Run BOTH.
I place 2-3 manual units exactly where I want them (in-content, where attention is), then let auto ads fill the rest WITHOUT overlapping.
— manual units get my best placements and highest CTR
— auto ads mop up footer/sidebar I'd never optimize by hand
— turn off auto-ad placement types that duplicate my manual ones
Best of both: control where it matters, automation where it doesn't. Steal it.
