Tag and category archives can quietly dilute a site — prune them with this checklist
Review an archive when it has no distinct search intent, weak content, or internal demand. Judge the page itself, not its URL pattern: would a visitor understand why this collection exists?
Checklist: • group only closely related posts • check impressions, clicks, and backlinks • find overlap with another archive or guide • remove vague or duplicate labels.
An archive with one or two weak posts usually adds little. Merge labels, move posts to the strongest relevant category, and remove the old archive from navigation and internal links. Use a 404 or 410 for pages with no value; redirect an archive with real links or demand to the closest useful hub.
Keep archives that organize a distinct topic and help users reach strong content. Add a short introduction only if it clarifies the collection. Thin filler copy does not make a page useful.
Prune in batches, log changed URLs, and recheck internal links and indexation after cleanup. Every remaining archive should have a clear job.
