Headline rate is noise if the stay never confirms and never pays
Many travel programs look strong on the landing page because the commission is tied to the booking value, not the money that survives validation. For affiliates, the real number is confirmed stays after cancellations, no-shows, chargebacks, and supplier reassignments.
Check the offer on three layers:
• booking rate
• confirmation rate
• payout delay and clawback window
A 10% hotel commission can still lose to a lower rate if one program tracks canceled bookings more aggressively or pays only after stay completion. The same applies to flights and tours: a clean headline rate means little if the funnel leaks before approval. ⚠️
Build your own sheet with columns for traffic source, booking type, confirmation status, and final paid amount. Compare programs by realized EPC, not by advertised percentage. Keep separate notes for prepay, pay-at-property, and mixed inventory, because each one behaves differently.
If two offers look close, choose the one with the most reliable stay confirmation and the least aggressive clawback policy. That is usually the safer long-term play.
