The dental office that lost to a clinic six miles away
Meet a dentist in suburban Phoenix. She was convinced she'd own the map pack for 'dentist near me' — her office sat two blocks from the densest neighborhood in her zip code. 'Proximity is king,' her last agency had told her. So she waited.
Three weeks in, nothing moved. A competitor six miles north kept outranking her from a strip mall nobody could find.
We pulled both profiles side by side. The difference wasn't distance. It was relevance and prominence — the other two thirds of Google's local ranking trio that everyone forgets. Her competitor had 340 reviews mentioning specific procedures; she had 41 generic ones. His profile listed 22 services with descriptions; she listed 'dentist.'
We spent six weeks rebuilding her services list, seeding reviews that named treatments, and writing a real business description.
By week nine she ranked first for nine of her twelve target terms — including from searchers a full mile farther away than her rival.
Proximity got her into the running. It never decided the race.
The lesson: 'near me' rewards the most relevant business in the area, not just the closest one — so stop blaming your address and start out-detailing your competitor.
