Content gaps are where competitor traffic grows without you noticing
Start with 3-5 direct competitors and map their main pages against your own. Look for missing topic clusters, not just missing keywords: comparison pages, use-case pages, FAQs, “best for” pages, and problem/solution articles. A gap is only useful if it connects to a page type that searchers already expect.
Check intent, not volume. If competitors rank with thin pages for “how to choose,” “alternatives,” or “vs” queries, they are often covering decision-stage demand you skipped. These pages usually sit near money pages, so missing them can weaken the whole cluster.
Use a simple matrix:
• competitor page exists, your page missing
• competitor covers a subtopic, your page stays generic
• competitor has internal links into the cluster, you link nowhere
Then sort gaps by proximity to your existing content. The easiest wins are pages that can link to a hub, support a product/category page, or fill a subtopic inside an active cluster. Ignore topics that would need a brand-new site structure just to make sense.
Build the gap only if you can place it inside a topical map. Otherwise you are adding isolated pages, not authority.
