The customer worth more than an ad
It was an ordinary audit when a skincare brand's analyst stopped on one recurring handle — a nurse with 1,200 followers who'd mentioned them unprompted 14 times in six months, always answering other people's questions.
No follower count would have flagged her. The signal was frequency and context: she wasn't posting at the brand, she was quietly doing their customer support in other people's threads. They mapped their mention graph and found nine more like her — micro-advocates with high reply-depth and zero brand relationship.
They sent product, asked nothing, and opened a private feedback channel. Over four months those ten accounts drove 2,300 tracked referral clicks at a 9% conversion rate — cheaper per acquisition than any paid channel they ran.
The takeaway: your most valuable advocates rarely have the biggest audiences. Listen for who answers questions about you, not who has the most followers.
