Validate your topical map first: 7 checks that prevent wasted content work

A topical map is ready for production only when every planned page has a clear job. Before writing, check the structure—not just the keyword list.

Use this checklist:
— One primary intent per page
— A clear parent topic and logical child topics
— No near-duplicate pages competing for the same query
— Coverage of definitions, comparisons, processes, and common problems
— A realistic path from broad hub to focused supporting page

Review the gaps from the reader’s perspective. Can a beginner find the basics, while an experienced visitor reach specific guidance? Add missing subtopics only when they support the main subject, not because a tool suggested another phrase.

Then test the map against your site. Each page should have a distinct title, audience, and internal-link destination. Mark topics that need first-hand expertise, original examples, or a stronger business reason before assigning them to a writer.

A clean map makes publishing easier: fewer cannibalization risks, stronger internal links, and a clearer standard for deciding what to write next. If a page has no unique purpose, merge it, reframe it, or remove it before production.
