PQL, MQL, and BOFU: a practical glossary for SaaS SEO that ties pages to revenue
An MQL (marketing-qualified lead) fits your target profile and shows meaningful interest. A PQL (product-qualified lead) has reached a product-use signal, such as completing setup or hitting a feature threshold. Neither label should automatically mean “ready for sales.”
Bottom-of-funnel (BOFU) content targets visitors close to a decision. Comparison, integration, and alternatives pages belong here because they answer fit, switching cost, workflow, and risk questions—not just broad educational queries.
An alternatives page compares your product with known options for a specific audience or use case. Make it useful: explain who each option suits, where it falls short, and what evidence supports your claims. Avoid turning it into a thin “us versus them” page.
Product-led growth (PLG) uses the product experience to drive acquisition, activation, and expansion. Connect SEO to that path: match the page promise to the first in-product action, then track activation and qualified pipeline—not clicks alone.
Use the glossary as an operating checklist: map keywords to funnel stage, define the event that makes a lead qualified, and review pages against signups, activation, and revenue. The best SEO page makes the next product step obvious.
