Auto-redirecting by IP undermines your own hreflang

Auto-redirecting by IP undermines your own hreflang

A self-inflicted wound we find often: a site invests in a clean hreflang setup, then bolts an IP-based geo-redirect on top that forces every visitor to their "local" version. The two fight, and the redirect usually wins in a way that hurts indexing.

The core conflict:

— Googlebot crawls predominantly from US IPs. An aggressive IP redirect can trap the crawler on the US variant, preventing it from ever seeing /de/, /fr/, etc. — which makes your carefully-built hreflang annotations point to pages Google never properly crawls.

— Hreflang's entire purpose is to let Google choose the variant per user in the SERP. An auto-redirect preempts that choice before the user even sees the page they clicked, often sending them somewhere other than the result they selected — frustrating and, at scale, a quality signal.

What the data suggests works better:

— Suggest, don't force. A dismissible banner ("Looks like you're in Germany — switch to German?") preserves user and crawler access to all variants.

— If you must redirect, never redirect Googlebot, and never make it a hard 302 that the crawler can't escape. Let the user land on the URL they chose.

Limitation: some businesses have legal or payment reasons to hard-gate by country. In those cases hreflang's benefit is partly lost, and that's a genuine tradeoff, not a bug to fix. We flag it as a conscious decision, not an oversight — but most geo-redirects we see are oversights.
