Coupon affiliates do not always steal credit—sometimes they expose gaps your funnel already has

Coupon affiliates do not always steal credit—sometimes they expose gaps your funnel already has

The myth is easy to believe because a coupon site often appears late in the path. But a last-click report shows only who received credit, not who created demand. A shopper may discover a brand through search, email, or content, then use a coupon site to verify the offer before buying.

Separate two questions:
— Did the affiliate introduce the customer?
— Did it merely intercept an existing purchase?

Review both assisted and last-touch paths. Compare branded-search behavior, direct traffic, new-customer share, order timing, and the percentage of orders containing a code. A high code-use rate alone does not prove leakage.

Test the program with clear rules: require valid, approved codes; exclude employee and public-student offers when appropriate; flag toolbar or extension behavior; and create a holdout or partner-level comparison where your tracking supports it. Check whether revenue, margin, and new-customer mix improve—not just attributed orders.

The useful conclusion is not “coupon affiliates are good” or “coupon affiliates steal.” Keep partners that add measurable reach or conversion value, and restrict placements that only rewrite credit at the checkout step.
