Mapping where your mentions actually come from
It was a quiet Thursday when a regional insurance brand assumed their buzz was nationwide. The map said otherwise — and changed their ad spend.
The turn was a geo breakdown. Step one: filter 60 days of mentions by stated or inferred location. Step two: normalize by population — raw counts favor big cities and lie. Step three: overlay sentiment by region, because volume and tone diverge. Step four: cross-check against where revenue actually comes from.
The normalized map showed their highest mention-per-capita was a mid-size metro they'd never advertised in — organic word of mouth. Meanwhile a 'priority' city had high volume but 20-point lower sentiment. They shifted budget toward the organic stronghold; cost per acquisition there ran 28% below average.
The takeaway: raw mention maps just redraw the population map. Normalize per capita and overlay sentiment, and you'll find pockets of love you didn't know you had.
