Myth: your homepage is your most authoritative page

Myth: your homepage is your most authoritative page

Common advice: funnel internal links to the homepage because it holds the most authority. For ranking purposes, this is usually backwards.

Homepages accumulate the most external links, yes. But they rank for almost nothing transactional or informational — they target brand queries. The pages that actually earn money rank for topic queries, and those benefit from links pointing to them, not away into a brand hub.

Internal link studies (and PageRank's own math) show authority flows along links proportionally. Dumping links into a homepage that links back out to 60 nav items spreads thin equity across everything equally — the opposite of concentration.

— Treat your strongest content page (the pillar that earns external links) as the distribution hub
— Audit which URL has the most referring domains; often it's a single viral guide, not the homepage

Caveat: for very small sites (under ~20 pages) the homepage often IS the link magnet, and the advice holds. The myth breaks on larger authority sites.

Method note: PageRank link-flow model; Ahrefs Best-by-links reports across 12 mid-size sites.
Confidence: medium
