Consolidating competing pages: how to merge content without losing organic traffic
Keyword cannibalization occurs when two posts target the same intent. Identify the "Master" URL—the one with the strongest backlinks or better historical performance. Never simply delete the weaker page; you need its equity to strengthen the primary version.
Audit both articles and move unique sections from the weaker post to the Master. The goal is a more comprehensive resource. Once the Master is updated, implement a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one to transfer authority.
Update internal links immediately. Change every link pointing to the old URL to the Master. This removes redirect hops and signals to search engines that the consolidated page is now the definitive source.
Consolidation often leads to a single page ranking higher than the two originals combined. Monitor Search Console for a few weeks to ensure the Master URL successfully absorbs the traffic and keywords from the redirected page.
