Build a topical map before you write a single page

Start with one seed topic, then split it into 5-7 main subtopics. These become your hubs. Under each hub, list support pages that answer one narrow question, compare one option, or solve one step in the process. If a page cannot fit under a hub, it probably belongs to a different map.

Use three filters to expand the map:
• search intent: informational, commercial, transactional
• depth: beginner, intermediate, advanced
• format: guide, checklist, comparison, FAQ, glossary

A good topical map is not a keyword dump. It is a set of connected entities, problems, and decisions. That means each cluster should cover definitions, use cases, pitfalls, alternatives, and internal links back to the hub. If a topic has no clear follow-up pages, the cluster is too thin.

Before drafting, check for overlap. Two pages should not fight for the same query, and one cluster should not repeat another with different wording. The goal is coverage, not volume. A small map with clean intent often beats a large one with loose structure.

Build the map first, then write the content plan from it. That keeps the site organized, makes internal linking natural, and gives each page a clear job.
