Per-Subdomain Sitemaps vs Cross-Submission: Know The Ownership Rule

Per-Subdomain Sitemaps vs Cross-Submission: Know The Ownership Rule

Multi-property setups break this constantly. The rule is about verified ownership.

Default: each host serves and references its own sitemap:
— blog.example.com/sitemap.xml lists only blog.example.com URLs.
— shop.example.com has its own.

Cross-submission (one sitemap listing URLs on another host) is allowed ONLY when:
— Both hosts are verified in the same GSC account, OR
— The sitemap lives in robots.txt of the host whose URLs it contains.

The failure mode:
— A root sitemap listing subdomain URLs that aren't verified together → those URLs are ignored.

Cleaner pattern for many subdomains:
— A sitemap index per host, each referencing only that host's children. Submit each property separately.

Pass/fail:
— ✅ Every URL in a sitemap is on a host verified with that sitemap.
— ✅ GSC shows no "URLs not on the same site" warnings.

Definition of done: ownership and sitemap scope always line up.
