The authentication trio: where tools help and where they lie to you
SPF, DKIM, DMARC are non-negotiable before any cold send. Tools that "set it up for you" cut corners.
Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 auto-handle DKIM/SPF for the sending domain — but cold senders use separate domains, so you configure DNS manually. MXToolbox and Mail-Tester verify it actually resolves.
The trap: many warm-up tools show a green checkmark for "DMARC found" even when your policy is p=none — which authenticates nothing. A green light isn't a passing grade.
Pros / Cons
— Mail-Tester: catches missing records fast, free tier limited to a few tests/day
— MXToolbox: deep DNS lookups, UI feels like 2009
— DMARC at p=none: visibility only, zero enforcement
Who it's for: anyone before their first send. Set p=quarantine once you trust your alignment.
Verdict: 5/5 verify with Mail-Tester + MXToolbox together. Trust DNS lookups, not your platform's reassuring checkmark.
