Stray listings kill location SEO long after the merge is done
Duplicate suppression is not just about merging profiles. The real work is finding every stray listing that still points to the same brand, address, or phone. If one branch has a stale Google Business Profile, an old Yelp page, and two directory copies, ranking signals split and users get mixed directions.
Start with a crawl of the brand name, exact address, and main phone. Then compare every result against the current location record. Look for old suite numbers, closed-store pages, landlord listings, and “pending” profiles that still show live hours. Those are common sources of duplication.
Use one simple rule: if a listing can send traffic, calls, or citations to the wrong page, it needs to be claimed, corrected, redirected, or removed. Keep proof of the canonical NAP, plus screenshots of the live listing before any change. That makes follow-up with directories much easier. 🔎
The clean-up is not finished until the old URLs stop ranking, the map pin matches the real entrance, and the phone routes to the right store. One clean master record beats ten almost-right copies every time.
