Deleting weak pages can hurt a site: check these signals before pruning
Deleting a page is not automatically a quality improvement. It may remove long-tail coverage, internal-link support, or a URL that still earns impressions. Treat pruning as a decision, not a cleanup ritual.
Before deleting, check:
• Organic clicks and impressions
• Backlinks and internal links
• Rankings, conversions, and assisted conversions
• Whether another URL already serves the same intent
• Whether a merge can preserve both pages’ useful sections
Choose the action that preserves value: refresh outdated sections, improve internal links, consolidate overlapping URLs with a relevant redirect, or leave a low-traffic page alone when it has a clear purpose. Delete only when the content is useless, duplicative, unsupported, and unlikely to improve.
After pruning, update internal links and monitor the affected topic cluster. A smaller site is not automatically better; a more useful, coherent one is.
