HTML Sitemap vs XML Sitemap: Different Audiences, Keep Them Separate
Named alike, built for different consumers.
XML sitemap is for crawlers:
— Machine-readable, lastmod, submitted to GSC. The discovery file.
HTML sitemap is for users and internal linking:
— A human-browsable page of links. Its real SEO value is flattening crawl depth on deep sites by linking to orphan-prone pages.
When the HTML sitemap earns its keep:
— Large site where some pages sit 5+ clicks deep. An HTML sitemap pulls them to ~2 clicks from home.
When it's clutter:
— Small, well-linked site. A 20-page HTML sitemap helps nobody.
Pass/fail:
— ✅ HTML sitemap links only to indexable, valuable pages (no thin/noindex).
— ✅ It reduces real click-depth, not just exists for show.
Definition of done: XML for bots, HTML only when it genuinely shortens crawl paths.
