Q: Honeypot fields or CAPTCHA to stop form bots — which is better?

Q: Honeypot fields or CAPTCHA to stop form bots — which is better?

A: Honeypots are quiet and free; CAPTCHA is stronger but costs you conversions. Most good forms start with the quiet one.

A honeypot is a hidden form field humans never see but bots fill in. If it's filled, you drop the submission. Zero friction for real users, invisible, free — and it stops the dumb, high-volume bots that make up most form spam. The limit: a bot built specifically against your form will learn to skip it.

CAPTCHA (the 'prove you're human' challenge) and its invisible cousins score behavior or make the user solve a puzzle. Much harder for bots, but every visible challenge costs you real conversions, and accessibility suffers.

Ladder them:
— Honeypot on every form, always. It's free and catches the bulk.
— Add a timing trap (forms filled in under ~2 seconds are bots).
— Escalate to invisible CAPTCHA only on forms still getting hit, and to a visible challenge only for users who already score risky.

Short version: honeypot first because it's free and frictionless, CAPTCHA second only where bots still get through. Never lead with a visible challenge — it taxes your real users most.
