Breadth-first vs depth-first publishing of a new template

Breadth-first vs depth-first publishing of a new template

Launching a 50k-page template all at once is a bet you can't unmake quietly. Compare the two rollout shapes.

1. Breadth-first (publish all 50k day one): fastest coverage, but if the template is thin Google learns that across the whole pattern and discounts it — a sitewide quality signal you can't easily reverse.
2. Depth-first (publish your best 500, validate, then scale): slower, but Google sees quality first and the template earns crawl trust before you expand.
3. Decision rule: unproven template or new domain → depth-first, always. Proven template on an established site → breadth is acceptable.
4. Owner-action: ship tier 1 (highest-data pages), measure index rate + impressions at 3 weeks, expand only if index rate > 70%.
5. Guardrail: each expansion wave inherits the prior wave's quality gate.

Rollback: hold later waves; the early cohort stays.

Ship gate: don't publish until all boxes are checked.
