Stealing a held box vs winning an empty one — pick by defense cost

Spotted in a planning doc this week: a team weighing whether to attack a snippet a strong domain already holds or chase queries showing no box at all.

The tradeoff nobody scopes properly:

— Steal a held box: the format and word-length are pre-validated, so you know exactly what to build — but you're displacing an incumbent, which is slow.
— Win an empty-box query: no incumbent, but Google may never trigger a box there, so you build on spec.

The sort we keep hearing — steal where the incumbent is a thin or aged page; go net-new only where sibling queries already show boxes (proof the intent triggers one). Reportedly chasing 'no box ever' queries is where effort goes to die. Watching this.
